Play and Learning

At Southfield Day Nursery we work using the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework to provide a high standard of learning and development for children aged from birth to five years. It is the curriculum used in each room in our nursery.

  • At Southfield Day Nursery we continually strive to provide a warm and nurturing environment in which children feel emotionally and physically safe. We aim to create a homely atmosphere in which staff know all children and every child’s needs are accepted, valued and met. We also aim to share warmth and joy with children, families and staff to enhance their sense of belonging, happiness and well-being.
  • We are inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, specifically, allowing children to use their own natural curiosity and energy to help guide their own development.
  • We provide opportunities for ‘real life’ resources and experiences as part of our ‘in the moment planning’ where children are authors and inventors of their own learning and we listen and value their creativity and opinions.
  • We encourage children to be Healthy, Strong, Skilful Communicators and Competent Learners.
  • We acknowledge our children’s ideas and experiences and builds on these to further stimulate them in preparation for school and all areas of later life.

Within the EYFS framework children experience the following learning areas:

Prime Areas

  • Personal, Social & Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Communication & Language

Specific Areas

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts & Design

All of our children’s development is recorded and analysed on a tracker to provide an individual pathway for future learning.
